Website pricing has always been confusing for small business owners. One quote comes in at $800, the next at $18,000, and nothing in the conversation explains the gap. What has changed in the last couple of years is that a genuinely good website now sits much closer to the bottom of that range – because of how it gets built, not because anyone is cutting corners.
What "AI-built" does and does not mean
Let us clear up two things first.
It does not mean a template. A template site is a pre-made layout with your logo dropped in. It looks like the hundreds of other businesses using the same theme, and you are stuck inside whatever the theme allows.
It does not mean DIY website builders. Those tools hand you the work. You spend your evenings dragging boxes around, and six weeks later the site is 80% finished and quietly abandoned.
AI-built means the developer uses AI tools to write the code and produce the layouts, guided by a designer who is making the actual decisions. The business owner still gets a designed site, built to their brand, their photos, their services and their words. The AI just removes the slow, repetitive parts of building it.
How the process works
- Discovery. A conversation about what the business does, who it serves, what makes the phone ring, and what visitors need to see before they will call. This part has not changed and cannot be automated.
- Structure and copy. We map the pages and write the content in plain Australian English, using your terminology and your service areas.
- Build. Where a traditional build might take four to six weeks of development, AI-assisted development produces working, custom pages in days. Layout, responsive behaviour, forms, and the fiddly technical details get done fast.
- Review. You see the real site, on a real link, not a flat mock-up. Changes get made while you are on the phone rather than added to a two-week revision round.
- Launch and manage. Domain, hosting, security, analytics, search setup – then it is live.
Why it costs less
Website quotes are mostly labour. If the build phase takes a fifth of the hours it used to, the price drops – simple as that. The parts that still take human time (understanding the business, design decisions, writing, photo selection, testing) are the parts that were always worth paying for.
The other saving is in changes. Historically, an update meant a developer opening the project, remembering how it worked, making the change and billing an hour minimum. That is why so many sites go stale: every fix had a price tag. With modern tooling those edits take minutes, which is what makes unlimited updates realistic to offer rather than a marketing line.
What you should still expect
Faster and cheaper does not mean lower standards. Hold any web provider – us included – to these:
- Custom design. The site should look like your business, not a generic layout with your logo in the corner.
- Fast on a phone. Most of your visitors are on mobile data. Pages should load in a couple of seconds.
- Findable. Proper page titles, descriptions, headings, image alt text, and a page per service and location that matters.
- Working forms. Enquiries must land in an inbox someone actually reads, with a notification. Test it yourself before launch.
- You own the domain. The domain name should be registered in your business name, not the agency's. Ask this question every time.
- Accessible. Readable contrast, sensible text size, alt text on images.
Where AI does not help
It cannot know that half your work comes from one industry, that people always ring about the same three things, or that your best photos are the ones of the team rather than the product. It cannot decide what your business should lead with. That is judgement, and it comes from talking to you.
It also writes bland copy if left alone. Every site we build gets its words checked and rewritten by a person, in Australian English, without the puffed-up phrases that make small businesses sound like software companies.
How we do it at Bold Media Group
We build and manage client websites using AI-assisted development, with our team handling the design decisions, the writing and the ongoing changes. Sites are fully managed: hosting, security, backups and unlimited updates included in a monthly cost. When your prices change or you add a service, you email us and it is done – no logins to remember, no editor to learn.
If you have been putting off a website because of the cost, or sitting on one that has not been touched in years, it is worth another look at the numbers. Get in touch and we will show you sites we have built and what they cost to run.
